We are pleased to announce the screening of three films to be hosted at Bryn Mawr Film Institute. Following a successful discussion series this Fall, the conversation will continue with moderated discussions to follow screenings of these extraordinary family dramas, each chosen to illustrate key aspects of communication between parents and children. Join us to be entertained and enlightened, and to share your insights.



The Great Santini

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Pat Conroy (The Prince of Tides), this film features Robert Duvall’s Oscar-nominated turn as an arrogant and combative Marine whose high-flying ways lead to conflict with his wife, played by Blythe Danner, and son, played by Michael O’Keefe (1979, USA, rated PG).





Whale Rider

This is a bold tale of a 12-year-old Maori girl who dreams of succeeding her grandfather as the chief of their people, despite his strong opposition. Beautifully shot on location (2002, New Zealand/Germany, rated PG-13).

Parents are invited to bring middle-school andhigh-school age children to view and discuss Whale Rider on February 12th.





Ikiru/To Live

Inspired by Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich, the director of Rashômon eschews feudal samurai in favor of a Tokyo bureaucrat, telling the story of a city clerk who, after thirty years as a rubber stamp, finally decides to make his mark (1952, Japan).
